Inspire - Transform - Succeed

Spanish

¡Hola! ¿Qué tal? ¿Cómo te llamas? If you can’t answer these questions yet, then by the end of the first Half Term at Lostock, you will be able to! Learning a foreign language is fun here and Spanish lessons include a lot of games, drama and use of information technology. Learning Spanish or any foreign language is also important for communication in English, as it expands students’ English vocabulary and enables them to understand better how their own language works. Also, being able to speak more than one language also prepares students for the global market they will be working in as adults.

Throughout the course we seek to open students’ minds to different cultures whereby students feel “Citizens of the World”.  Furthermore, we want to nurture a lifelong passion and curiosity for languages and to consolidate the skills for future language learning.

Key Stage Three

At Lostock College Key Stage 3 Spanish is a 3-year course.  In Year, 7 students are taught to listen, speak, read and write in Spanish. They learn how to give and understand information about themselves and their families, school, hobbies, where they live and buying food. Don’t worry if your child has not studied Spanish at primary school, they will soon pick it up.

Key Stage Four

At Key Stage 4, students have the opportunity to follow the AQA Spanish GCSE course, which builds on the skills they have acquired at Key Stage 3. GCSE Spanish is currently part of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) suite of qualifications and is recognised by Sixth Form colleges as excellent preparation for the rigours of AS and A-Level studies. Students who opt for GCSE Spanish are assessed in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing in their final examination in Year 11. They develop their skills in memorising language and using it creatively to communicate their ideas.
